<p>After much deliberation you decide that it&#8217;s time you lost some weight. You&#8217;ve looked at your current diet and decided that you want to make some changes. The first to go is sugar. No more sugar in your coffee, and from now on you&#8217;re going to examine every packet for any sign of sugar. You are convinced that this will do the trick!</p>
<p>What exactly is sugar? Well, it&#8217;s a chemical. That may sound a bit odd, but it puts it in its rightful category. It has no protein, no carbohydrate, no fiber and no enzymes. In fact it is made up of &#8216;empty&#8217; calories.</p>
<p>When you eat sugar, you put your body in a bit of a dilemma. In order to metabolize the sugar it has to borrow nutrients from other cells. When your brain gets the message that its reserves are being depleted, it sends out hunger signals. Your reaction is to come to its rescue &#8211; usually with some high-calorie food. The result is weight gain.</p>
<p>Having stopped taking sugar you may feel the need to have something sweet &#8211; you&#8217;d be unusual if you didn&#8217;t. If you choose a sugar supplement like saccharin or aspartame you are making an error.</p>
<p>One thing that has been puzzling scientists is that despite the growth in the consumption of sugar substitutes, there has been no reduction in levels of obesity, in fact the situation has become considerably worse.</p>
<p>Recent studies have found that far from helping you to lose weight, artificial sweeteners actually help you to put on weight!</p>
<p>Scientists at Perdue University carried out experiments with animals, some of whom were fed food containing natural sweeteners and others with food containing artificial sweeteners. Over the same period those animals fed with artificial sweeteners consumed more calories and gained more weight than those fed with natural sweeteners. Why? Because our bodies have learned to associate sweetness with food loaded with calories. When the calories don&#8217;t materialize we continue to eat to make up for the shortfall in expected calorie intake &#8211; the result &#8211; weight gain. You can&#8217;t fool your body!</p>
<p>So what about sugar? The best thing to do is to reduce sugar intake gradually, but most importantly, avoid artificial sweeteners.</p>

<p>Remember Chrissy from Three&#8217;s Company? This plan was developed by her. Suzanne Somers has gotten into nutrition and fitness in a big way. It started with the Thigh Master and has continued with what people are calling the Somersize diet.</p>
<p>Somersize gets its basis from the ideas behind several other plans. Eating food in certain combinations will help the participants lose weight. The body&#8217;s metabolism has to learn to function properly. Eating junk food and greasy fare has ruined our metabolism and thrown our bodies out of whack.</p>
<p>This diet plan places the blame squarely on white flour.  Foods that contain a high percentage of white flour are extremely high on the glycemic index.  This means that when you eat this type of food your body&#8217;s insulin production spikes.  This results in you becoming more hungry more often and binging on food in order to maintain energy levels.</p>
<p>The Somersize plan came out of Suzanne&#8217;s book, Get Skinny on Fabulous Food. It sounds like a gimmick and several people consider that it is. It is not a complete plan that teaches the basis behind food composition, but does offer lists of eliminated foods.</p>
<p>The Plan divides food into four groups.  The first group being pro-teen and fats.  These two foods are combined because fat and protein eat together slow digestion.  The next group is the veggie group.  Veggies can be eaten as long as they do not contain a large amount of starch.  Luckily there are many vegetables that fit this description.</p>
<p>The next group is the carbohydrate group.  White flour carbohydrates are frowned upon.  However, any carbohydrate derived from healthier grains like whole-grain is always the best choice. Dieters are encouraged to eat cereal cheese and milk but to avoid varieties with excessive fat in favor of those with better ingredients.</p>
<p>Fruits are the last group. Fruits provide healthy sugars. No fruits are off limits just don&#8217;t add sugar or other sweeteners to them or you&#8217;ll defeat the purpose. There is a list of foods to eliminate while on the plan included. They are foods that most plans which stress low calorie carbohydrates tell participants to limit. The only problem with this list is that there is no plan for incorporating them back into the diet in small quantities if the participant wants to do so.</p>
<p>The guidelines are general. Fats and protein can be eaten together but can&#8217;t be eaten with carbohydrates. Vegetables are allowed to be eaten with fats and proteins and carbohydrates. Fruit should be eaten at the beginning of the day. There needs to be a span of several hours between a carbohydrate meal before eating one with proteins and fats. The Somersize plan is quite generic so participants definitely should do their research and be sure they understand the importance of portion control before beginning. </p>
